Quote / growing advice from one of our customers - "These toms will have a real place in the future of my allotment as despite their small size they crop late and they crop so profusely that we make soup and other preserves from them. I would like to add some real advice to your customers from past experience. They grow as a bush, needing no after-care at all, but it might be useful to learn from our experience and grow them through plastic sheeting to avoid fruits from being spoiled by the soil. We tried this last year and it was a winner.
They are resistant to disease, surprisingly prolific, what people buy these days in large quantities and they are so versatile. We intend starting them off earlier this year, now that we have cracked their method of growth."

Runner Bean (Phaseolus coccineus) - Prizewinner

Runner Bean (Phaseolus coccineus) - Prizewinner

The runner bean is without doubt Britain’s favourite home grown bean and during the summer months they can be seen in practically every vegetable plot and allotment across the length and breadth of the British Isles. A well known, popular, reliable and highly recommended variety of runner bean, Prizewinner (now an heirloom variety) has, as the name suggests, won many a trophy on the show bench over the years.
The long straight pods of Runner Bean Prizewinner are of excellent quality and are especially tasty. They stay succulent on the vine and are virtually stringless. A heavy cropper, Runner Bean Prizewinner gives good picking of these well flavoured pods over a long period. The pods can be sliced and boiled green or the white beans are useful in soups.
The runner bean is a climbing plant and as such needs support to give of its best.

Pepino Dulce (Solanum muricatum) - Melon Pear

Pepino Dulce (Solanum muricatum) - Melon Pear

The melon pear or pepino dulce is a fruit with variable shape and size. It is more or less round or oblong, and can be up to about 6 in (15cm) long. When ripe, the melon pear has a yellow-cream skin, with purple stripes. The flesh is juicy and moderately sweet and has the same texture as a melon. This shrub is native to South America, more precisely to Peru and Chile. While not really a new fruit, it is slowly being rediscovered. Melon pear or pepino dulce likes a sunny or semi-shaded, frost-free location, sheltered from strong winds, does well planted next to a south-facing wall or in a patio. The plants should be fertilised in a manner similar to tomatoes. Quite sensitive to moisture stress, their root systems spread out and are quite shallow, irrigation is therefore crucial for plant health as well as for pollination, fruit set and crop quality.

Salad Cucumber Tessa F1 (Cucumis sativus) seed

Salad Cucumber Tessa F1 (Cucumis sativus) seed

Ridge, or outdoor, cucumbers give similar results to greenhouse cucumbers but are easier to cultivate. We offer cucumber Tessa F1 which we think is much better for an allotment or vegetable garden. Slightly smaller than supermarket cucumbers, Tessa F1 is about 20cm long with a 3cm diameter. The skin is smooth and dark green. Showing a high resistance to disease, Cucumber Tessa is easy to grow and has a sweet, juicy taste.
It can be eaten without peeling and is excellent for salads. In our own tests, the taste remained good even when the fruit started to turn yellow. Ethylene gas given off by tomatoes and other fruit will also turn the fruit yellow, so they should be stored separately.

Cucumber Tessa F1 is highly recommended.
