Ageratum houstonianum is a popular annual garden plant. Also known as Floss Flower it is often used for edging borders and is also useful in beds and containers. A neat bushy plant with clusters of fluffy flowers in shades of white, pink and blue from June until the first frosts. Grows to approx. 20cm. Ageratum will grow in any reasonable garden soil but cannot withstand heavy shade or a wet site.
Annual plant with aromatic leaves for cucumber souring. Dried leaves are good for salads, cottage cheese, fish, roast meat and sauces. Basil came originally from India where it was used to cleanse and protect Hindu houses and temples. The flavour is sweet but slightly peppery. Oxheart tomatoes are a large, old-fashioned, heirloom or heritage type tomatoes that have come back into fashion because they are fragrant and sweet, making them an excellent addition to many dishes. They are indeterminate type tomatoes, (they continue to grow and produce fruit until killed by frost) and the sprawling plants need support. The plants can get as tall as 10 feet, thought most reach only 6 feet. Plants have fern-like foliage and can also be grown in pots, either indoors or outdoors, growing indoors greatly extends their growing season. Oxheart tomatoes need full sun, well-drained soil and lots of fertilizer. They prefer soil with a relatively neutral pH. Before you plant your tomatoes, add a good general purpose fertilizer to the soil. After planting, apply .5 kilo per 10 square metres and work it well into the top 15cm of soil.
