Primrose Seed Production
Primrose seed production is a technical challenge. To grow plants until they flower is only half the job, the easiest part. From flowering in January until seed harvest in May, plants are difficult to maintain. All pollination and seed harvest is by hand. Correct post-harvest handling of seed is critical to maintain quality.
Our Fantastica seeds are produced by a specialist nursery, with all pollination and quality issues under direct control.

Primrose Flower Forms

Primula (Primula acaulis, Primula veris) have a very interesting pollination system. There are two distinct flower forms, "pin" and "thrum". The plants allow successful pollination only between flowers of different form. If pollination is attempted between flowers of the same form, then no seed is set. In wild populations, the ratio of pin : thrum is maintained at 50 : 50.
The technical term is "sporophytic self incompatibility".
In practice, this phenomenon is used to control the pollination of plants during seed production.
In the wild, this mechanism prevents inbreeding and thereby maintains high vigour in the population.
